A Little Bit About The Creative Artiste Mixed Media Challenge
The Creative Artiste Mixed Media Challenge Blog offers a monthly challenge for mixed media artists. The theme is anything goes, but you must always use more than one media. There rules can be found here. It’s a great way to show your work and meet other artists. Have a look at the blog. They do have prizes!
My Masterpiece for February
The artwork I am sharing is a 3D, 11″x14″ mixed media piece on a wooden panel. The face is sculpted with Creative Paperclay® and the background has a variety of mediums.
I began with a paper mache mask stuffing the back with tissue paper and using matte medium to adhere it to the board. When that dried I sculpted all the details of the face, neck etc. with Creative Paperclay® and coated with gesso once dry. I painted the face with acrylics and added highlights with chalk pastels.
For the background, I added collage papers and applied a thin coat of gesso, wiping off areas that I wanted to be more prominent. I added color, drying between each layer. Using a stencil and black pigment ink, I added the splatter pattern to the background. I poured on black embossing powder, removed excess and heated to reveal a lovely raised texture giving further dimension to the page. To finish off I added white rub-ons.

Each layer adds such great depth to the piece.
