Something with Wings: A Mixed Media Tag

Hello my crafty friends, my design team post for Crafty Catz Challenge Blog this week is a beautiful super sized tag. The theme is “Something with Wings” so I chose a butterfly. I love butterflies. There are so graceful and bring a sense of serenity when you watch them flutter by.  I painted the butterfly with vibrant, metallic spray inks from Lindy’s Stamp Gang in order to capture it’s beauty.

I have a simple tutorial below showing how I made this tag. The supplies I used are:

  • jumbo manila tag
  • texture paste
  • stencil
  • spray inks. I used Lindy’s Stamp Gang
  • gesso
  • black ink stamp pad
  • rubber stamp
  • makeup sponge
  • glue
  • charcoal pencil
  • paintbrushes
  • water
  • scissors

Instructions

Step 1: Place the stencil over your tag and apply the texture paste with a palette knife.

Step 2: Remove the stencil carefully and allow to dry.

Step 3: Paint with gesso and allow to dry thoroughly.

Step 4: Stamp you image and color. I painted with the spray ink.

Step 5: When your tag is dry, spray with inks. You can spray with water also to help inks move around.

Step 6: Gently dab to remove excess paint and allow to dry. When dry, stamp your image. It doesn’t have to be perfect as you will be gluing a the image you already colored on top. What you really want is the antennas.

Step 7: Splatter some ink on your tag.

Step 8: Using your ink applicator or make up sponge, apply a shadow off dark ink around the edges of the tag, quote and butterfly.

Step 9: Glue everything in place and you are done.

The finished tag.

I do hope you enjoyed my tutorial. Don’t forget to subscribe to my blog so you don’t miss out. Be sure to check out The Crafty Catz Weekly Challenge Blog. Thanks for stopping by!
